What is Hexdle?

Hexdle is the daily colour guessing game. Every day at midnight UTC Hexdle picks one colour, the same one for every player in the world, and gives you 5 attempts to name its six-digit hex code. You never see the colour while you are guessing. All you get is feedback on the digits you have already tried, which is what turns Hexdle from a game of taste into a puzzle with a method.

A hex code is three pairs of digits describing how much red, green and blue a colour contains, each running from 00 for none to FF for full. So #FF0000 is pure red, #00FF00 pure green, #808080 a mid grey, and #3C9F20 the mossy green the worked example below solves. You do not need to know any of that before your first Hexdle board. The feedback teaches it to you faster than a colour theory tutorial would.

Hexdle belongs to the family of daily one-puzzle-a-day games that Wordle started: one board, shared by everybody, gone at midnight. What Hexdle adds is that the answer is a number as well as a colour, so the game rewards arithmetic rather than vocabulary โ€” and you can get good at it in a week.

How to play Hexdle

  1. Enter six hex digits โ€” 0 to 9, then A to F โ€” with the on-screen keypad or your keyboard, and press Guess.
  2. Hexdle marks every digit separately. A green tile means that digit is exactly right. โ†‘ means the answer's digit is higher than the one you played. โ†“ means it is lower.
  3. Narrow each position using those arrows. A digit marked โ†‘ against your 4 has to be 5 through F, so playing A next splits what is left roughly in half again.
  4. Check the swatch beside each row. It shows the colour you actually named, and the percentage next to it is how near that colour sits to the answer.
  5. Solve the board in as few guesses as you can. Hexdle reveals the colour when you finish, and the next puzzle arrives at midnight UTC.

There is nothing to install and nothing to sign up for. Hexdle runs in the browser, keeps your board if you close the tab, and remembers your streak on its own.

A worked Hexdle board

The fastest way to understand Hexdle is to watch four guesses close in on #3C9F20. The solver below never sees the colour โ€” only the arrows:

GuessFeedbackWhat it tells you
1. 888888โ†“ โ†‘ โ†‘ โ†‘ โ†“ โ†“The opening guess. Every digit is now known to sit in a range of eight rather than sixteen.
2. 4CCC44โ†“ โœ“ โ†“ โ†‘ โ†“ โ†“Middle of each surviving range. The second digit lands exactly: C is locked.
3. 1CAE11โ†‘ โœ“ โ†“ โ†‘ โ†‘ โ†“Three more digits pin down โ€” the third must be 9, the fourth F, the sixth 0.
4. 3C9F20โœ“ โœ“ โœ“ โœ“ โœ“ โœ“Two slots were down to a coin flip between two values. This one calls both right.

Notice what the last step admits. After three guesses two positions were still a coin flip between two values, so a four-guess Hexdle solve is part method and part nerve. Had the flip gone the other way the board would have been won on the fifth instead โ€” which is why Hexdle gives you exactly 5, and why the leaderboard is worth looking at.

Why Hexdle marks every digit

Most colour games show you a swatch and ask you to eyeball it, which rewards people who already have a trained eye and leaves everybody else guessing. Hexdle marks all six digits independently instead, so every guess is real information: sixteen possible values per position, halved each time you read the arrow properly. Four well-chosen guesses can pin down a colour you could never have recognised by sight.

That is also why Hexdle is fair to play colour-blind. Nothing in the puzzle depends on telling two greens apart; the board is arithmetic wearing a coat of paint, and the swatches are there to make the answer satisfying rather than to make it solvable. That design is the reason Hexdle plays the same for everyone.

Hexdle scoring and the daily leaderboard

Solving sooner scores more. A 5-guess Hexdle win is worth 2,000 EP, four is 3,000, three is 4,000, two is 5,000, and a first-guess solve pays 6,000 โ€” a result rare enough that people screenshot it. A board you do not finish still scores, based on how near your best colour got, so a close miss beats a wild swing. Nothing else about your Hexdle board affects the score โ€” not how long you took, not what order you tried the digits in.

Every finished board feeds the daily Hexdle leaderboard, which resets with the puzzle at midnight UTC and breaks ties by who finished first. Playing Hexdle also keeps the streak you share across every game on the site, so a day you find hard still counts as a day you showed up.

Hexdle strategy: five tips that actually help

  • Open in the middle. 888888 splits every range almost evenly, so whatever comes back you have eliminated about half of the possibilities. It is the strongest opening Hexdle has, and the one most regular players use every day.
  • Treat six digits as six puzzles. They are independent. A good red digit tells you nothing whatsoever about blue, and trying to reason about the colour as a whole is how good players talk themselves out of correct guesses.
  • Remember the order is RRGGBB. First pair red, middle green, last blue. Reading the pairs backwards is the most common way to waste a Hexdle guess.
  • The first digit of a pair matters sixteen times more. Moving 3 to 4 in the leading slot shifts that channel by 16; the trailing slot shifts it by one. Lock the leading digits before you fuss over the others.
  • Trust the percentage over your instinct. Two colours can look close and be far apart in hex, and the reverse happens just as often. In Hexdle the number is the honest signal.

Hexdle and the other daily games here

Hexdle is one of the daily games on dlegame.com. If you like a puzzle you can actually solve, play RNGdle, which goes the other way: one random number a day, scored on how rare its patterns are. Both reset at the same moment, both take about a minute, and both feed the same streak as Hexdle โ€” so the usual routine is a Hexdle board first and a roll after.

Hexdle FAQ

How many guesses do you get in Hexdle?

5. Solving in fewer scores more EP, and a board you do not finish still scores for how close your best colour got.

What do the arrows in Hexdle mean?

They point at the answer. โ†‘ means the answer's digit is higher than the one you guessed in that position, โ†“ means it is lower, and a green tile means that digit is exactly right. Hex digits run 0โ€“9 and then Aโ€“F, so A counts as higher than 9.

When does Hexdle reset?

Midnight UTC, the same instant for every player, which is what makes the daily board a fair race. The countdown on the page shows exactly how long is left.

Is the Hexdle colour the same for everybody?

Yes. The colour is derived from the date, so every player in the world is handed the same target on the same day and results are worth comparing.

What is the best first guess in Hexdle?

888888. It sits in the middle of the range for all six digits at once, so each arrow it returns rules out roughly half of the remaining values. Any opening made of 7s or 8s does a similar job.

Do I need an account to play Hexdle?

No. Your board, your streak and your leaderboard place are tied to this browser automatically. Signing in only carries them across to your other devices.

What is a hex colour code?

Six digits describing how much red, green and blue a colour contains, two digits per channel, from 00 up to FF. #000000 is black, #FFFFFF is white, and every other colour sits somewhere between.

Can I play past Hexdle puzzles?

No, and that is deliberate. One board a day for everybody is what makes a daily game worth talking about โ€” an archive would turn it into an endless quiz.

All of them reset at the same moment, take about a minute, and share a single streak โ€” so most people play two or three rather than picking one.
